Create a spec-compliant /llms.txt so AI assistants can understand and cite your site. Fill in the fields, copy the result, and host it at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
llms.txt is a community convention, not a web standard — no standards body backs it and no crawler is obliged to read it. Google has said publicly that AI Overviews and AI Mode run on ordinary search signals, not on this file. Surveys in 2026 put adoption near a tenth of sites, and request volume from answer-engine crawlers is very low.Fill in the site name to generate your llms.txt…
Copy this into a file named llms.txt and upload it to your domain root. Most hosts serve /llms.txt from the public/ folder.
llms.txt is a Markdown file served at your domain root that gives AI systems a curated map of your most important pages, usually with a one-line description of the site and a short list of links. It was proposed in 2024 as a community convention and is maintained that way — no standards body has adopted it, and no crawler is required to read it.
Not on the evidence available. Google has stated publicly that AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on ordinary search signals rather than this file, and log studies in 2026 found very few requests for it from the crawlers that drive AI citations. Treat it as documentation hygiene for AI tools, not as a ranking lever — publishing it is close to free, but it should not displace work on the page itself.
Developer documentation, API products and anything an AI coding tool or agent needs to read quickly. That is where the file does real work: it gives a machine a short, accurate route into your content instead of a full crawl. Stripe, Vercel, Cloudflare and Anthropic publish one. A local business or a general content site gets much less from it.
robots.txt controls access — it tells crawlers what they may and may not fetch, and the major AI crawlers honour it. llms.txt controls nothing. It is a suggestion about what is worth reading, with no blocking power and no enforcement. If your goal is to allow or refuse AI crawlers, that is a robots.txt job, and our AI crawler checker shows what yours currently allows.
Save it as llms.txt at your domain root, so it resolves at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On most frameworks that means dropping it into the public folder and redeploying. Nothing else needs to change on your site.
